The 2025 Grammy Awards

Updated: May 8, 2025

The 67th Annual Grammy Awards took place on February 2, 2025, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, hosted once again by the ever-charismatic Trevor Noah. The night was filled with unforgettable performances, emotional speeches, and a few surprises that left fans and artists alike buzzing

Biggest Winners of the Night

Beyoncé makes History

The biggest moment of the night belonged to Beyoncé, who finally secured her first Album of the Year for Cowboy Carter. In addition to this historic win, she also took home Best Country Album, making her the first Black artist to win in the category - a ground-breaking moment that was widely celebrated. Beyoncé’s emotional acceptance speech paid tribute to the pioneers of country music while emphasizing the importance of genre-blurring and artistic freedom in the industry.

Kendrick Lamar’s Dominance

Hip-hop was at the forefront this year, with Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” taking home both Record of the Year and Song of the Year. This marked only the second time a rap song has won both categories, solidifying Lamar’s continued influence in the industry. He ended the night with a total of five awards.

Best New Artist: Chappell Roan

The Best New Artist category is always a highlight, and this year, the award went to Chappell Roan, an artist whose distinct style and fearless storytelling have captivated audiences worldwide. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, was also nominated for Album of the Year, further solidifying her as a rising force in the industry.  Chappell Roan delivered a notable acceptance speech upon receiving the Best New Artist award. She advocated for record labels to provide emerging artists with affordable healthcare and liveable wages, reflecting on her personal experiences of being signed as a minor and later dropped by a label. Roan emphasized the need for better support within the industry, stating, "Labels, we got you, but do you got us?"

Unforgettable Moments

Shakira’s Powerful Speech

Shakira won Best Latin Pop Album and used her acceptance speech to take a stand against former President Trump's immigration policies, drawing both praise and controversy.

Legendary Tributes

The Grammy stage paid homage to music royalty with heartfelt tributes to The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, featuring surprise guest appearances and emotional performances that honoured their enduring legacies.

The Grammys emotional tribute to Liam Payne

Liam Payne fans were deeply moved as the Grammys honoured the late One Direction star with a touching tribute. Coldplay's Chris Martin took centre stage during the ceremony's annual In Memoriam segment, paying homage to the legendary voices lost over the past year.

As host Trevor Noah introduced the tribute, a montage of Payne and his One Direction bandmates played on the big screen, capturing them waving to a sea of devoted fans from a rooftop - a touching tribute to his remarkable musical journey. As clips of him beaming and performing on stage unfolded, Payne's voiceover reflected: "We never imagined any of this would happen. When you really sit and think about it, we've accomplished some incredible things."

Unforgettable Moments Show-Stopping Performances

The Grammys are known for their spectacular performances, and this year was no exception. Doechii delivered a visually stunning and athletic performance, proving why she’s one of the most exciting new artists in the game. Meanwhile, The Weeknd made a dramatic return to the Grammys stage after years of boycotting the awards, delivering a high-energy set that had the crowd on its feet.

The performances were nothing short of spectacular. Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars delivered an electrifying duet, while Charli XCX brought an energetic London club vibe to the stage. These moments reminded everyone why live music is at the heart of the Grammys.

Sabrina Carpenter also had a breakthrough moment, winning Best Pop Vocal Album for Short N' Sweet and Best Pop Solo Performance for her infectious hit Espresso. Carpenter's multiple outfit changes and energetic stage presence made her one of the night’s most talked-about stars.

One of the most moving moments of the night was the tribute to Quincy Jones, a legendary producer and musician whose influence spans generations. Stevie Wonder, Cynthia Erivo, and Janelle Monáe led the tribute, performing a medley of hits that celebrated Jones’ immense contributions to music.

A Grammys with a Cause

This year’s Grammys took on a more reflective tone in response to the devastating wildfires that affected Los Angeles in early 2025. The event was transformed into a telethon that raised over $7 million for MusicCares Fire Relief, supporting musicians and communities impacted by the disaster.

Trevor Noah expertly balanced humour with heartfelt appeals for donations, proving once again why he’s the perfect host for an event that blends entertainment with social awareness.

Fashion Highlights

The Grammy red carpet is always a fashion spectacle, and this year was no different. Beyoncé stunned in a custom silver gown that paid homage to country music icons, while Taylor Swift opted for an edgy, futuristic look that nodded to her Reputation (Taylor’s Version) era. Kendrick Lamar kept it classic in an all-black ensemble with subtle tributes to hip-hop pioneers, and Sabrina Carpenter turned heads with a series of dazzling outfit changes throughout the night.

Snubs & Surprises

One of the most talked-about moments of the night was Taylor Swift leaving empty-handed despite her six nominations. Still, the pop icon maintained an enthusiastic presence throughout the evening, even having a viral moment with her signature “22” hat.

Perhaps the most surprising moment of the night was Billie Eilish losing out on Best Pop Solo Performance and Album of the Year, despite being a frontrunner in both categories. Her album Hit Me Hard and Soft received critical acclaim and commercial success, leading many to believe she was set to take home top honours. The losses left fans in disbelief, especially after her breath-taking live performance earlier in the night. Some speculated that the Recording Academy’s preference for more mainstream pop acts played a role in the outcome.

Final Thoughts

The 2025 Grammys delivered on all fronts—history-making wins, political statements, and jaw-dropping performances. With hip-hop and country taking centre stage, it’s clear that the musical landscape is shifting, embracing both legacy and innovation. What was your favourite moment from the night?
