Song Review: Silly Games by The Velvet Room

Updated: May 8, 2025

Debut tracks can go one of two ways, either they play it safe or they wear their heart on their sleeve. With 'Silly Games,' The Velvet Room does the latter. From the very first listen, the track feels intimate, like a late-night voice memo between friends. There's certain lo-fi charm that gives it the feel of a bedroom recorded secret rather than a studio polished product and that works in its favour. It invites you in.

Sound & Style

The Velvet Room is clearly rooted in classic indie rock, but there are glimmers of other influences just beneath the surface, a bit of garage rock grit, a pinch of post punk sharpness, even touches of 90s Britpop melancholy. The guitars are crisp but not overbearing, with a slightly warped shimmer that gives the song texture. The chord progressions are familiar in the best way. Warm, melancholic and full of understated hooks.

The rhythm section is steady and grounded, never trying to outshine the mood. It holds everything together like glue. Letting the guitars breathe while giving the vocals enough room to drift in and out like thoughts in your head. It's classic indie formula, but it's executed with just enough flair to feel fresh.

There's also something refreshingly unpolished about the mix. You can tell this is a demo but rather than being a drawback, it gives the track an authentic, DIY vibe. It reminds you of why indie rock got its name in the first place.

Vocals & Lyrics

The vocals carry a kind of detached sincerity, like someone telling you something important but trying not to show how much it matters. There's a vulnerability in the tone, something that hints at emotional weight without being overly performative. It suits the song perfectly.

Lyrically, 'Silly Games' touches on emotional push and pulls, maybe in the context of a relationship or maybe just the weird in between of life when you're figuring stuff out. The lines aren't overly poetic or abstract, they're straightforward and a little unsure, which makes them feel real. There's a conversational rhythm to the lyrics that matches the easy going pace of the music.

The chorus lingers, simple and cyclical, like a thought that keeps looping in your head. It doesn't scream for attention but it stays with you after the track ends.

The Demo Effect

What makes 'Silly Games' compelling is its rawness. You can hear the edges. Moments where the timing's a little loose or the mix wavers slightly and instead of breaking the illusion, it enhances it. This is a band still finding their voice, but doing it in a way that's honest and self aware.

There's potential here and lots of it. The Velvet Room isn't trying to chase trends or mimic whatever's hot right now, they're tapping into a timeless sound just enough personal flair to carve out their own space.

Final Thoughts

'Silly Games' feels like the kind of song you stumble across on a random playlist and end up playing on repeat. It's not flashy but it's emotionally grounded and confidently understated. That's a tricky balance to strike and The Velvet Room does it well.

If this is what they sound like on a first demo, it's exciting to imagine where could go with a full studio release or EP. The bones are solid, now it's just about building on them.

Rating

7/10

A strong debut that captures the spirit of indie rock with heartfelt songwriting, a dreamy lo-fi aesthetic and raw potential. It's not flawless but that's kind of the point. 'Silly Games' feels honest and for a first demo, that honesty counts for a lot. Definitely a band to watch.
